Minister for Manufacturing, Exports and Trade Richard Dalla-Riva met with recreational boating business leaders in preparation for the development of a growth strategy for the industry which will secure jobs and see growth for the sector.

Mr. Dalla-Riva hosted a marine industry roundtable to develop a comprehensive strategy and consider the challenges facing the future development of the $2 Billion industry and potential pathways to expanding employment and business opportunities in the sector.

The industry contributes $696 Million to the Victorian economy and supports more than 10,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, with more than 3,000 people directly employed in the sector.

“The Victorian Coalition Government strongly supports a thriving and competitive recreational boating industry which emphasises competence, maintenance, design and management of boat launching facilities and marinas.” Mr. Dalla-Riva said.

“Today’s roundtable represents the first step in implementing our election commitment to develop a comprehensive strategy to turn Victoria’s recreational boating industry into a national leader.”

“Such a strategy will stimulate recreational boating demand through increased facilities and services. It will increase recreational boating participation and help to alleviate the many pressures currently restricting growth within the sector.” Mr. Dalla-Riva.

Mr. Dalla-Riva used the forum to outline the Victorian Coalition Government’s commitment to manufacturing, exports, productivity and competitiveness. The Minister also received feedback on key industry issues for the sector.

“The sector contributes significantly to the economy and this is evident in the growth of boating wholesale and retail sales and ongoing returns associated with boating services such as accessories, fishing equipment, maintenance, servicing and launching fees.” Mr. Dalla-Riva said.

“We also have 170,000 recreational vessels registered in Victoria and more than 300,000 Victorian recreational vessel license holders meaning that one in 30 Victorians own a boat.”

“Trailer boats are also an important part of the industry in Victoria, representing 98 % of all registered boats and the ease of access to popular waterways has seen an increase in boating activity.”

“What we now need is a strategy with which we can go forward through a greater provision of facilities and services to create more jobs and make this important industry grow and prosper.” Mr. Dalla-Riva said.
