Coalition Supports Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher today launched the Victorian Coalition Government’s program to provide up to six Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to local researchers in 2013, to study overseas and bring their expertise home to Victoria.

The three-year Fellowships will provide support for two years overseas in a leading research institute or university followed by one year with a Victorian company or research organisation.

“We will be providing Victoria’s brightest and most talented early career researchers with a rare opportunity to gain international research experience, and to return to a position in Victoria, bringing their experience with them.” Ms. Asher said.

“Victoria is the leading state for innovation and research and the Coalition Government is committed to providing opportunities for our talented researchers to stay working here in Victoria.”

Ms. Asher said the Fellowships, announced in the recent budget, fulfil the Coalition Government’s election commitment to provide scholarships to enable Victorian students to study in overseas universities and laboratories, and also support Victorian companies and research organisations to employ the postdoctoral fellows upon their return and benefit from their international knowledge.

“The Coalition Government also announced a $50 Million international engagement strategy in the 2012-13 budget, and part of this strategy is tapping into the networks that our expatriate workforce has with export markets overseas. When these researchers return to Australia, their networks and knowledge will be an invaluable asset to Victoria.” Ms. Asher said.

The Victorian Postdoctoral Research Fellowships will be awarded to early career Victorian researchers in the physical sciences, life sciences (apart from human health and medicine), mathematical sciences, engineering and information and communication technology sectors.

The Fellowships provide an indexed salary of $71,000 p.a. plus superannuation and additional allowances. Applications close on 5 February 2013.
