Australia’s richest 1,600 m foot race, the Minara Resources Elite Mile, will be run this weekend as part of the annual Leonora Golden Gift athletics carnival.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said more than 3,000 people were expected to attend the event over the weekend, including athletes from across Australia.
“There is more than $47,000 prize money up for grabs for winners of various athletic events, and winners of the Minara Resources Elite Mile will take home $6,000 plus a gold ingot worth more than $1,500.” Dr. Hames said.
“There are plenty of other events for people to enjoy such as a free community concert, horse racing carnival, fireworks, children’s entertainment, market stalls and street performances.”
“In addition, the town will be celebrating the official opening of the Leonora Sporting Complex.”
The State Government, through Eventscorp, has provided funding for the Leonora Golden Gift Weekend through the Regional Events Scheme (RES).
The Minister said RES supported a wide range of events in country areas to attract visitors, add vibrancy to the region and increase its profile.
“The State Government has recently doubled the funding for RES to $600,000, thanks to the Royalties for Regions program.” Dr. Hames said.
“With the extra funding, Eventscorp will be able to support 39 events in regional areas in 2011-12, including 20 that are receiving support for the first time.”
“The Leonora Golden Gift Weekend is a key event in Australia’s Golden Outback and the State Government is committed to supporting it again next year through the scheme.” Dr. Hames said.
The Leonora Golden Gift Weekend will be held on June 4-6, 2011.
