Andrews Government today announced the appointment of Michael Cahill SC as a judge of the County Court.

“Mr. Cahill has made a significant contribution to Victoria’s legal profession over many decades and I congratulate him on his appointment.” Attorney-General Martin Pakula said.

“I would like to thank Judge Jane Campton for her 16 years of dedicated service at the County Court.”

Mr. Cahill has more than 30 years’ experience in the legal profession, including appearing in jury trials in the Supreme, County and appellate courts. He has also appeared before Royal Commissions, the Coroner’s Court and other investigative and regulatory bodies.

His extensive trial experience spans serious offences such as murder and large-scale drug trafficking, as well as federal offences such as narcotics importations, terrorism, foreign bribery and other complex corporate crime.

Mr. Cahill has also been involved in trial work for Aboriginal people in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

He is an accredited Victorian Bar Readers’ Course instructor, and has taught advocacy workshops in the Pacific, Bangladesh and Uganda.

He is also the Chair of the International Commission of Jurists, Victoria, and was Vice-Chair of the Victorian Criminal Bar Association from 2010–16.

Mr. Cahill was admitted to practice in 1980 and signed the Victorian Bar Roll in 1990. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2016.

He has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics.

Mr. Cahill will replace Judge Jane Campton, who retired on 18 May after almost 16 years of service as a judge of the County Court.
