Retail Boost For Malvern

The Minister of Innovation, Services and Small Business, Louise Asher said today the new David Jones store at Malvern Central is a great boost for Melbourne’s retail sector and reputation as Australia’s most stylish city.

“The new 7,522 sqm store which opened today features a village format and concentrates on a selection of key categories including clothing and footwear.”

“It generates new employment opportunities it further enhances Melbourne’s retail landscape and is an important vote of confidence in Victoria’s future.” Ms. Asher said.



David Jones CEO and Managing Director Paul Zahra said expansion in the Victorian market is a key focus for David Jones.

“We opened our new Highpoint store in March this year and invested significantly in the refurbishment of our Chadstone store in 2012 as well as the redevelopment of our Bourke Street Mall flagship stores.”

“Our commitment to this market continues with our new Malvern Central store the first ever village format department store in Melbourne.” Mr. Zahra said.

Ms. Asher said the Victorian Government is delighted that David Jones is continuing to expand its presence in Melbourne and demonstrates an increasing commitment by David Jones to the retail industry in Melbourne.

“Other stores including Zara, Harvey Norman, TopShop, Ikea, Costco, Urban by Target, Paul Smith, and Cotton On have all shown great confidence in Melbourne by investing substantially in our retail market.”

“The Victorian Coalition Government is strongly committed to the retail sector, which makes a massive contribution to the State, directly employing over 300,000 people and turning over almost $65 Billion last financial year.”

“Victoria’s current policies on trading hours, retail tenancy leases and other regulatory issues are at the forefront of national retail policy in supporting the retail sector.” Ms. Asher said.
