A man has been charged by Police following an incident in Allawah overnight.

Police have arrested a man after being threatened with a meat cleaver.

About 10.45pm two officers observed a man to narrowly miss being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road at the intersection of Railway Parade and Elizabeth Street.

Police stopped and spoke with the 35-year-old man who appeared to be heavily affected by alcohol.

The officers attempted to assist the man when he became very aggressive and allegedly produced a meat cleaver and a knife and threatened to kill the officers.

One of the Police officers drew their firearm, while the other deployed capsicum spray with no effect.

The pair called for urgent assistance and further Police responded.

The accused sat on a bus shelter while Police were calling on him to drop his weapons.

The Duty Officer for the Hurstville Local Area Command attended the scene and deployed his Taser and the arrest was made.

The man was taken to St George Hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries sustained earlier in the evening.

He is expected to be charged with using a weapon to avoid apprehension, affray, assault Police, and being armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

Bail is yet to be determined.
