Coalition Landfill Rescue Package For Casey Families

A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will provide $24 Million to meet the full remediation costs of the Stevensons Road landfill, Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mary Wooldridge said.

This will bring total funding for the site to $41.9 Million and will take the pressure off local ratepayers who have been forced to carry the cost of long-term remediation, following methane gas leaks in Cranbourne in 2008.

“Casey Residents living near the Stevensons Road landfill have received inadequate assistance from the Brumby Government.” Ms. Wooldridge said.

“The absence of appropriate funding from the Brumby Government has meant that Casey Council has had to take out a loan to pay for the remediation, and substantially increase council rates in order to meet payments.”

“As a result, the families and ratepayers who were the victims of the landfill disaster are now also being hit with higher rates.” Ms. Wooldridge said.

“The Coalition’s investment will assist the City of Casey to continue vital measures such as long-term in-home monitoring for residents, upgrading of gas extraction and completion of drainage works, and meet other costs associated with the remediation of the landfill.”

“We will put a stop to the political handballing of this situation by the Brumby Government and take responsibility for ensuring the safety of families and the protection of our environment.” Ms. Wooldridge said.

“Our $24 Million commitment provides a significant saving to council which can now be spent on much-needed infrastructure for the community. In addition, Casey Council will be able to cut their rate increases to ease the cost of living burden on local families.”

“The savings per year ensure that the City of Casey won’t have to waste $36 Million on interest and repayments over a two decade period.”

“The Coalition will work with the local community, Casey Council and the EPA to ensure that high level environmental standards are enforced to ensure the future safety of residents.” Ms. Wooldridge said.
