Northern Territory Minister for Sport and Recreation Matt Conlan

Mopping Up Labor’s Mess

Territorians will have to pay at least $450,000 to fix the Labor Government’s bungled Marrara netball court development.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Matt Conlan, said just three years after construction of the $6.2 Million facility, four of the 10 courts have suffered water damage and will need to be replaced.

Work on digging up one of the courts began at Marrara this morning.

“This is a legacy of the Henderson Government’s failure to provide proper oversight of projects under its management.” Mr. Conlan said.

“It’s a legacy that Territory taxpayers and the new Country Liberals Government have been lumped with.”

“The Labor Government authorised the installation of Rebound Ace on four of the 10 netball without first testing whether the surface could withstand Darwin’s tropical conditions.” Mr. Conlan said.

“The Rebound Ace courts were apparently laid on a concrete base which made drainage problematic and resulted in bubbling on the court’s surface.”

“The remediation works will see a more suitable Plexicushion surface laid at Marrara.”

“While the Mills Government is committed to providing sports infrastructure across the Northern Territory, it is concerning that almost half-a-million dollars will be spent cleaning up the Henderson Government’s mess.” Mr. Conlan said.
