Man Charged After Nine Hour Stand-Off – Tuncurry
A man is facing court today charged as a six-month-long investigation into alleged sexual assaults on the State’s Mid North Coast culminated after a nine hour stand-off with Police yesterday.
Manning Great Lakes Detectives have been conducting an investigation into a number of sexual assaults that are alleged to have occurred between 1993 and 2006.
About 1.20 pm yesterday, Police went to a unit in Wharf Street at Tuncurry to make an arrest as a part of their inquiries. When they arrived a man inside the unit refused to let Police in.
It will be alleged officers made their way into the unit and were confronted by a 43-year-old man who threatened to ignite fuel tanks within the unit.
Police left the unit and established a perimeter with negotiations commencing with the man. As a precaution nearby residents were evacuated.
About 10.50 pm, the man was arrested after State Protection Support Unit operatives entered the building.
The man was taken to Forster Police Station where he has been charged with 10 offences relating to the investigation into alleged sexual assaults and yesterday’s barricade.
The Tuncurry man was refused bail and will appear at Forster Local Court later today.
