An elected Liberal Nationals Government will undertake a feasibility study for a world-class Land Transport Museum at the former Newport Railway Workshops (West Block) site, and provide $250,000 to support the Australian Railway Historical Society Museum’s restoration work.

“We’ve got such a proud history of trains, trams, cables cars and buses in Victoria. We must invest in our transport history to make sure it’s there for visitors and locals to enjoy now and into the future.” Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said.

Australian Railway Historical Society Museum opened in 1962 and has the largest collection of Victorian Railway steam locomotives.

Currently the Australian Railway Historical Society Museum located in Newport in Melbourne’s west welcomes 6,000 visitors a year.

Newport has long been the home of Melbourne’s railways with over 530 steam locomotives produced at the Newport Railway Workshops and hundreds of passenger carriages and thousands of goods trucks.

“Victoria had Australia’s first rail network and this grant will help preserve the engines that helped Victoria become the connected state it is today.” Shadow Minister for Tourism Heidi Victoria said.

“This announcement will ensure that The History of Transport mural finally has a permanent home at the Land Transport Museum.”

Museum will also become the new home of The History of Transport mural (also known as the Cavalcade of Transport). The mural depicts the changes in modes of transport as Victoria moved towards a new industrialised era.
