Legendary swimming coach Laurie Lawrence dropped into Casuarina Swimming Pool today to help promote the Northern Territory Government’s Water Safety Awareness Program for children under five.
Developed with Royal Life Saving NT, the Program provides five free water safety lessons for parents and guardians, and their children aged 6 months to five years old in urban, rural and remote areas of the Territory.
The Territory Government has provided $150,000 in the 2013 Budget to continue the Program which will be funded annually.
Minister for Young Territorians Peter Styles was on hand to watch Laurie Lawrence in action today and urged parents to take advantage of the free Water Safety Awareness Program.
“Since the Water Safety Awareness Program began in 2003 more than 8,000 children under five have completed the scheme which is terrific.” Mr. Styles said.
“But there is still much more to do when it comes to water safety and I urge all parents to take advantage of the five free lessons and ensure their children learn this vital life skill.”
“Since the Water Safety Awareness Program was implemented the Northern Territory has gone from having the highest drowning rate, per capita, of children under five to now having the lowest.”
“The Program works and keeps our children safe when in, on and around water and that’s why we are ensuring it continues.”
Today’s Swim and Survive and Stay Alive for 4 to 5 year olds’ Workshop with Laurie Lawrence saw Royal Life Saving NT instructors pick up some valuable tips to use when teaching the Water Safety Awareness Program.
“I’d like to thank Laurie Lawrence for his support of the Government’s Water Safety Awareness Program and for passing on his knowledge to our instructors.”
“Royal Life Saving NT Executive Director, Floss Roberts, and the team do a fantastic job rolling out this important scheme across the Territory and I thank them also for their hard work and dedication.”
