Tasmania Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding

O’Byrne Exposed – Speed Limits To Be Slashed On Key Regional Roads

Victor P Taffa

Road Safety Chief John Gledhill has exposed as false David O’Byrne’s claims that there won’t be blanket speed reductions on Tasmanian roads, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said.

“The fact is, as Mr. Gledhill has revealed on ABC local radio this morning, a number of iconic and well-travelled roads will have their speed limits cut due to a lack of maintenance.”

The roads are likely to include:

  • Richmond to Brighton
  • Triabunna to Swansea
  • Conara to St. Marys
  • Zeehan to Strahan
  • Sorell to Orford
  • The Lyell Highway between Hobart and Queenstown
  • The Murchison Highway between Burnie and Queenstown
  • The Esk Highway between Conara and the East Coast
  • The Tasman Highway between Sorell and St. Helens

“The Liberals are concerned that Labor’s plan to lower speed limits is a poor substitute for their failure to properly invest in our roads, and this list confirms that.”

“This is yet another example of Tasmanians paying the price for Labor wrecking the budget.” Mr. Hidding said.
