Three Landmark Projects To Give Birth To Karratha’s New CBD

  • $65 Million road works and landscaping to create Karratha’s new main street
  • $150 Million Stage 2 Pelago East to deliver another 174 apartments
  • New Hilton Hotel for Karratha

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls today launched three key projects through the State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative that will help transform the Karratha town centre into a major central business district.

The town’s new projects include the upgrade to the city centre’s street network; Stage 2 of Finbar’s high-rise apartment development Pelago East; and yesterday’s announcement by Hilton Worldwide and Australian consortium Ramtron Australia to develop a Hilton Hotel.

Mr. Grylls said a City of the North with 50,000 people needed a vibrant and thriving CBD, and these projects represented a significant step towards achieving this goal.


“Thanks to $65 Million from Royalties for Regions, work started today on the construction of Karratha’s new official main street.” Mr. Grylls said.

“The works will include pushing Sharpe Avenue through to Dampier Road to establish a defined main street that Karratha has traditionally lacked.”

“The new landscaped, tree-lined Sharpe Avenue with shaded walkways will become the much-needed focal point with public facilities and open spaces that are accessible and pedestrian friendly.”

“The new street network will attract more business investment, by improving people’s ability to move in and out of the city centre and contributing to a revitalised city heart.”

The main street works will also coincide with Finbar Group Limited’s announcement to commence construction of stage two of the Pelago apartment complex.

The nine-storey development will contain 174 apartments starting from $440,000 and 2,000 sqm of commercial space, completing the bookend to the Sharpe Avenue redevelopment.

“In addition Finbar Group Limited has capped its latest release and as such Pelago East is priced on par with Pelago West and we are grateful the company has focused on assisting with housing affordability in the Pilbara area.” the Minister said.
