Five Months Into Giddings’ Premiership, Not A Single Job Created

Shocking new jobs data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that in the first five months of 2011, not a single new job has been created in Tasmania (on trend terms).

Coincidentally, this is the same five months that Lara Giddings has been Premier, Shadow Treasurer Peter Gutwein said today.

“Over the past two months alone, more than 300 jobs in total have been shed and in the last month alone we lost 100 fulltime jobs.”

“Our unemployment rate remains the highest in the country, and would be higher but for the fact that the participation rate has fallen from 61.7 % in June 2010 to just 61.1 % in May 2011.” Mr. Gutwein said.

“The falling participation rate signals that people are getting frustrated and are giving up looking for jobs because they just aren’t there.”

“On top of this, a massive 2,680 jobs were lost in May in seasonally adjusted terms.” Mr. Gutwein said.

“These jobs losses are the direct consequence of Labor and the Greens putting up the “closed for business” sign by shutting down our forest industry, banning development, and threatening to sack thousands of their own employees.”

“In contrast, the Liberals have a plan to turn our economy around by slashing red tape, supporting small business, and opening Tasmania up for business again.” Mr. Gutwein said.
