Tourism Minister Liz Constable and Culture and the Arts Minister John Day welcomed Jerry Hall and Rider Strong the lead actors in the theatre production of The Graduate to Western Australia today in their first public appearance in the State.

The Graduate is exclusive to Perth and is the first major production to be brought to the State under a new agreement between EventsCorp, Perth Theatre Trust and Kay and McLean Productions Pty Ltd.

Tourism Minister Liz Constable said The Graduate was a great example of the State Government’s success in attracting a mix of high-profile sporting and cultural events to Western Australia.

“Eventscorp supports a diverse range of events and strikes a balance between culture and sport, big and small, Perth and regional, and I’m confident this production will be a major drawcard.” Dr. Constable said.

“This is another example of Eventscorp and the Department of Culture and the Arts working together to bring a major event to Perth following their partnership securing the blockbuster A Day in Pompeii and Peggy Guggenheim: A Collection in Venice.

“The State Government will continue to work collaboratively across portfolios to encourage more productions and events to come to WA helping develop Perth’s profile as a city with a rich cultural offering.”

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the State Government was committed to supporting a wide range of productions and performances by world-class artists.

“The people of Western Australia deserve the opportunity to see international-standard events and performances, and I am delighted we are the only Australian city hosting The Graduate, which has been performed at London’s West End and on Broadway in New York.” Mr. Day said.

“Our State’s capacity to attract high profile events such as The Graduate reinforces Perth’s growing international standing as a city with a vibrant and varied Arts and Culture Scene.”

Local actors Michelle Fornasier, Luke Hewitt (winner of the Perth Theatre Trust/Equity Guild Award for Best Actor in 2008 and 2009), Perth theatre veteran Steve Turner and WAAPA graduate Alison Van Reeken will play supporting roles in the production.

The Graduate will be staged at His Majesty’s Theatre from August 26 to September 12.
