Hyundai Hopman Cup XXIV preparations are off to a flying start with confirmation that reigning Wimbledon women’s champion Petra Kvitova will compete.
Kvitova will be teaming up with men’s world number nine Tomas Berdych to represent the Czech Republic.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said Kvitova’s first visit to Perth would generate a lot of excitement among tennis fans.
“She is currently ranked number seven in the world and is one of the genuine stars of the moment on the WTA circuit.” Dr. Hames said.
“Petra’s win over Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon final was sensational, and we hope she brings the same form to Perth as the team competes for the Czech Republic’s second Hopman Cup title.”
Although the other teams for Hopman Cup XXIV are yet to be announced, the Czech combination is sure to be one of the hot favourites.
Thomas Berdych beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2010, before being beaten in the final by Rafael Nadal.
A winner of five ATP titles, Berdych has a career high world ranking of six.
It is understood Kvitova and Berdych will use the Hopman Cup to prepare for a shot at the mixed doubles title at next year’s London Olympics.
“Hopman Cup XXIII broke attendance and broadcast records and the appearance of top quality players like Kvitova and Berdych will surely help push those records again.” the Minister said.
“Congratulations must go to Paul McNamee and his team for attracting the world’s best tennis players to Perth year after year.” Dr. Hames said.
“The State Government, through Eventscorp, is very proud to be a major founding partner of the Hyundai Hopman Cup.”
The Czech Republic won the Hopman Cup in 1994 when represented by Jana Novotna and Petr Korda.
