Housing Crisis Hurts Young And Old

The Henderson Government’s appalling Housing failures span all Generations but young people and senior Territorians are being particularly hard hit.

Shadow Minister for Young Territorians and Seniors, Peter Styles, said people on low incomes are bearing the brunt of the country’s highest capital city rents and record house prices.

“It’s simply unaffordable for young people trying to enter the housing market or seniors who were content to pay rent in preference to buying a home.” Mr. Styles said.

“The release at the weekend of the Property Council’s ‘My City’ report showed just how dismally this Government has done delivering affordable housing for Darwin residents.”

“Just 9% of Darwin residents believe the city has a good range of quality affordable housing.” Mr. Styles said.

“This lamentable outcome is a direct result of the Labor Government’s failure to release enough land for residential development.”

“Young people and seniors are being forced to leave Darwin and the Northern Territory because of this Government’s failure.” Mr. Styles said.
