Tasmania Opposition Leader Will Hodgman
Labor Dinosaurs Stuck In The Past On Plastic Bags
Victor P Taffa
Labor is stuck in the past on plastic bags by refusing to support our pledge to ban plastic bags within two years.
“It is obvious that Tasmania Environment Minister Michelle O’Byrne is happy to sit around and wait for a National ban simply shows just how tired and out of touch this 11 year old government is. Even a State Labor Government in South Australia has shown more willingness to act.” Mr. Hodgman said.
Within two years a Hodgman Liberal Government will ensure that Tasmanians can no longer use shopping bags that take 100 years or more to break down or pose a hazard for our wildlife and contaminate our waterways.
Instead our stores will provide customers with biodegradable and reusable bags to carry goods. A non-biodegradable plastic bag free Tasmania will add substance to our clean, natural image and promote our Tasmanian brand.
Early in 2008 two years ago the State Labor Government said they were “working towards” banning these bags by January 2009.
More than a year on, there has been a total lack of action.
Both State and Federal Labor have shown themselves to be thoroughly impotent despite their promises to act.
Only the Tasmanian Liberals have the leadership and vision to deliver the real change that Tasmania needs and make Tasmania plastic bag free within two years.
