Libs Congratulate Tourism Award Winners

Tourism is one of the pillar industries of Tasmania’s future economy and if last night’s tourism awards are anything to go by, the industry has a bright future.

I congratulate all of the winners of last night’s tourism awards, Opposition Leader Will Hodgman said.

“A majority Hodgman Liberal Government will work tirelessly to make our tourism industry the best in the nation.”

“Already, tourism is worth $2.4 Billion to the Tasmanian economy, and directly and indirectly employs 28,000 Tasmanians. As we outlined in our Future Directions Statement, the Liberal vision is to grow our industry to 1.5 Million visitors per year by 2020.” Mr. Hodgman said.

“Industry estimates that by achieving this goal, we can create 8,000 additional jobs and generate an extra $1 Billion in economic activity. We will boost tourism marketing by $16 Million to give our industry the support it needs.”

“The Liberals will say “yes” to tourism developments of all sizes in Tasmania, such as the Pump House Point development and the Three Capes track, rather than endlessly finding ways to say “no”. We will separate Tourism Tasmania from the bureaucracy freeing it from its bureaucratic straitjacket, and thereby positioning it to be a more effective, outcomes focussed entity.” Mr. Hodgman said.

“Tasmania has some incredible tourism assets, but with challenging circumstances facing Tasmanian tourism operators, now is the time to be aggressively chasing opportunities, making Tasmania competitive and positioning ourselves as a tourism mecca for Australia and the rest of the world.”

“Only the Liberals have a positive plan to grow our tourism industry and we will work hard to reach our ambitious but achievable goal of attracting more tourists to Tasmania.” Mr. Hodgman said.
