Australia’s Population Hits 23 Million: Time To Set A Tassie Target
Victor P Taffa
It’s time that Tasmania benefitted from a growing population. Australia’s population is now 23 million strong, yet in contrast our population growth has flat-lined, Opposition Leader Will Hodgman said.
“If we want a brighter future for Tasmania, we must start attracting more skilled young people and families to Tasmania instead of waving them goodbye at the airport.”
“A Big Tasmania is essential for a prosperous Tasmania. If we want to stand tall and proud as a state, we need a bigger population to generate the wealth, the jobs and opportunities to grow our economy and increase standards of living.” Mr. Hodgman said.
“A majority Liberal Government will set a long term target to grow Tasmania’s population to 650,000 people by 2050. This is an ambitious but achievable target above the medium growth projections of both the Demographic Advisory Council and the ABS.”
“There is no silver bullet for population growth. A Big Tasmania is about aggressively pursuing opportunities for economic growth, supporting industries where we have a competitive advantage, putting up the open for business sign, reducing red and Green tape to attract business investment and jobs, maintaining frontline services and addressing cost of living pressures.”
“These are all priorities of a majority Liberal Government. We support a Big Tasmania and increasing Tasmania’s population is a debate we have to have as a state.” Mr. Hodgman said.
