Four Hawthorn members have given Richmond’s Swan Street a brown and gold feel on Thursday, replacing and renaming the street signs with ‘Hawks Street’ in the lead-up to Saturday’s Grand Final.
AFL.com.au has tracked down the group, who have boldly promised to petition for a permanent change to the street name should Hawthorn win its 11th premiership on Saturday.
Every sign along Swan Street was changed to Hawks Street by the pranksters, and one sign for the Swan Hotel was changed to Hawks Hotel.
Pointers to Swan Street on City Road, outside Collingwood’s Westpac Centre and also at the Hawthorn end of the street, were also changed.
“We think it’s un-Victorian not to be supporting the Victorian team in the Grand Final and we felt Swan Street represented that lack of support.” a member of the group, who did not want to be named, told AFL.com.au.
“We’ll petition for it to be changed permanently should the Hawks win.”
Yarra Council told AFL.com.au the group had used stickers, so the prank was not a big concern.
In a bonus for the group, the Council said they would leave the Hawks Street signs up until after the Grand Final.
A motorist spotted the four men in high visibility vests just after midnight setting up in a work truck on Swan Street.
“Upon closer inspection I noticed them actually changing the street signs from Swan Street to Hawks Street.” the caller told radio 3AW.”
“They’ve gone up and down Swan Street changing every sign from Swan to Hawks.”
“They’ve even gone to the extent of replacing all the green signs with the same kind of font and colour background. It’s amazing.”
