Call In Of Dromana Bay Life Saving Club Permit Application

Victor P Taffa

Planning Minister Matthew Guy has called in a permit application for a new Dromana Bay Life Saving Club building from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“In accordance with new Government Policy, I have given the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council 48 hours notice of my intention to call in this proposal because it raises Major Policy issues.” Mr. Guy said.

“I also believe that determination of the tribunal proceeding may have a substantial effect on the achievement or the development of planning objectives.” Mr. Guy said.

On 16 June 2010 Council indicated its support for the permit after it had considered objections and comments from interested parties.

An application for review was lodged at the tribunal by the Port Phillip Conservation Council citing over development of the site, alienation of public land and traffic impacts as its grounds.

“Currently the Life Saving Club is using two shipping containers for storage and operational space and is seeking to build a more permanent home to continue to serve the community and cater for more members.” Mr. Guy said.

“There are also critical funding conditions with which the club needs to adhere to be eligible for $150,000 in grants from council and the Community Safety Emergency Services Program.” Mr. Guy said.

Member for Nepean Martin Dixon said this was great news.

“The Dromana Bay Life Saving Club has worked hard to get this far; it is a project which has great community support.” Mr. Dixon said.

Parties to the proceeding will now have an opportunity to make further submissions before a recommendation to the Governor in Council is finalised.

The Department of Planning and Community Development will meet with the parties to hear and consider their views on behalf of the Minister.
