New Unit Aims To Improve Housing Affordability

A New Housing Affordability Unit has been established to advise the Victorian Government on ways to address housing affordability, Planning Minister Matthew Guy said.

“Housing affordability is one of the greatest challenges facing Victoria, which is why I have set up this specific unit within the Department of Planning and Community Development.” Mr. Guy said.

“Housing affordability is a complex issue; there is no single solution to achieving improved affordability but it requires a whole-of-government approach to find solutions.”

“It is essential to understand the issues from a range of sources, such as housing market performance and matters identified by the building industry which impact on housing development.” Mr. Guy said.

The unit will provide the Minister for Planning with whole-of-government advice on policies, legislation and procedures that could be reformed to make housing more affordable.

An initial responsibility of the unit will be to develop policies and legislative reform to support the establishment of the Urban Renewal Authority.

Mr. Guy said the future Urban Renewal Authority will have an important role in improving housing affordability in the longer term in Melbourne’s inner urban area.

“This will be important for the development and renewal of key sites such as E-gate and Fisherman’s Bend.” Mr. Guy said.

The unit is also working with the Department of Treasury and Finance to ensure the Coalition of Australian Governments’ Housing Supply and Affordability Reform agenda is informed by Victoria’s Policy directions and priorities.
