Armed Robberies Spike To Five Year High

Armed robberies have spiked to a five-year high in the wake of Labor and the Greens’ savage cuts to frontline Police numbers, according to Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Management Elise Archer.

“The Department of Police and Emergency Management Annual Report, tabled in Parliament yesterday, reveals that there were 78 armed robberies in Tasmania last year, an increase of nearly 20 % compared to the previous year.”

“The spike this year is even higher than the previous years of 2007-08 (58); 2008-09 (56); and 2009-10 (54).* Armed robberies of retail outlets have doubled from last year, and there’s also been an increase in armed robberies on the footpath. It is literally becoming less safe to walk on the street under this Labor-Green Government.” Ms. Archer said.

“The simple fact is, you simply can’t take 100 frontline Police off the beat and not expect it to result in an increase in crime. With his savage cuts, Minister David O’Byrne has given the green light to criminals.”

“It’s time he took responsibility for the cuts, and for their consequences. In contrast, a majority Hodgman Liberal Government would immediately begin the task of rebuilding our Police service.” Ms. Archer said.
