Apollo Bay’s Great Ocean Road International Marathon has received $25,000 from the Coalition Government through Tourism Victoria’s Events Program for tourism marketing.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Louise Asher said the Coalition Government was committed to supporting the regional Victorian tourism industry and strengthening Victoria’s reputation as a National Leader.

“The event will also help boost visitation and economic activity in the area after the impacts of the recent Victorian floods.” Ms. Asher said.

“It is important to get the message out that it is ‘business as usual’ after the January floods. The Great Ocean Road International Marathon encompasses five running activities and will be promoted as a ‘festival of running’. The route stretches along Victoria’s dramatic south-west coastline from the golden sands of Lorne to picturesque Apollo Bay.”

Local Member for Polwarth Terry Mulder encouraged everyone of all levels of fitness to participate, or go to watch the amazing race that showcases the spectacular scenery between Lorne and Apollo Bay.

“As Minister for Roads it gives me great pleasure to throw my support behind a project that raises the profile of one of the most spectacular stretches in the country The Great Ocean Road.” Mr. Mulder said.

“The project not only raises the profile of the Great Ocean Road region both nationally and internationally as one of the country’s iconic tourist attractions, but it also highlights the region as a significant destination for nature-based tourism.” Ms. Asher said.

Initially attracting 1,275 participants in 2005, the event has continued to grow and attracted a record 3,583 people in 2010, a 22 % increase compared with 2009. This included 408 interstate participants and 57 international participants.

“The marathon adds to the impressive calendar of events in the region including the Apollo Bay Music Festival, Falls Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, the Shipwreck Coast Classic and the Shootout Golf Tournament.” Mr. Mulder said.

The Great Ocean Road International Marathon will be held between Lorne and Apollo Bay along the Great Ocean Road from 14 to 15 May 2011.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for Victoria, contributing $15.8 Billion to the Victorian economy and employing 185,000 people across the State.
