Govt Hasn’t Even Begun Fuel Reduction Study

Premier Lara Giddings has today sunk further into the mire over her rejection of expert advice into fuel reduction burning, according to Opposition Leader Will Hodgman.

“On Thursday, the Premier claimed the “alternative option”, a $400,000 study into a fuel reduction strategy was “underway”*, but it’s today been revealed by the Chief Fire Officer that not only has the study not even begun, its completion could be as far as 18 months away.#” Mr. Hodgman said.

“This means that three and a half years will have passed between the government receiving expert advice recommending $25.7 Million for a fuel reduction program, until the completion of the report the government commissioned instead.”

“It’s time Ms. Giddings came clean about this issue. Did she reject the expert advice because the two Green cabinet Ministers opposed it, or was it because Labor had wrecked the budget and she couldn’t afford it? Or was she just simply happy to ignore the expert advice?”

“The Premier must immediately release the full cabinet submission, and explain why the government has been sitting on its hands for years on this very serious issue.” Mr. Hodgman said.
