Victor P Taffa

The Victorian Coalition Government is establishing a Ministerial Advisory Committee to provide advice on the delivery of election commitments related to the health of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) Victorians and appropriate clinical health responses for the community.

The Ministerial Advisory Committee can provide advice to the Minister for Health and Ageing and the Minister for Mental Health and Community Services on health responses for the GLBTI community.

“The Government can seek the committee’s advice on GLBTI health, mental health, HIV treatment and prevention issues and assist in the raising clinical awareness of GLBTI issues in mainstream services. Another area of focus could be support for ageing GLBTI Victorians.”

“The Victorian Coalition already is delivering on its $200,000 election commitment to research the effects of accelerating ageing on HIV positive people.”

Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the advisory committee would also advise on implementing, strengthening and monitoring initiatives to support the mental health issues of GLBTI people.

“It is further evidence of the Coalition Government’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of GLBTI Victorians, which we have already demonstrated by delivering on our election commitment to provide $4 Million to strengthen and expand support services for GLBTI youth.” Ms. Wooldridge said.

Committee members will be drawn from relevant Victorian GLBTI communities and from clinical professionals with experience in working to improve the health of GLBTI people.

The term of office of appointees to the advisory committee will be to 30 October 2014 or as required.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons. Application forms and information can be found at: http://www.health.vic.gov.au/diversity/glbtimac.htm
