More than 1,000 Sailors will compete in the Geographe Bay Race Week Sailing Regatta, which starts in Busselton today.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said race week, now in its ninth year, was the biggest annual yachting regatta in Western Australia.

“The Regatta started with 35 boats in 2003 and now attracts more than 100 boats and more than 1,000 sailors from around the world.” Dr. Hames said.

“However, race week is not just a fantastic event for competitors. It is also an important drawcard for South-West tourism each year injecting about $1.5 Million into Busselton’s economy.”

“The State Government is proud to support Race Week through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Scheme.” Dr. Hames said.

Spectators at this year’s regatta will see the event’s biggest-ever fleet in action.

The Reichel/Pugh 62, Limit, has arrived in WA fresh from the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The boat will compete in the regatta before taking part in the Fremantle to Bali 2011 Race.

The Minister said 2011 would be a big year for sailing in WA.

“In December, the world’s best Olympic class sailors are heading here for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships the biggest international sailing event of the year.” Dr. Hames said.

“More than 1,400 athletes and 850 boats from about 80 nations will sail off Fremantle. Competitors will be chasing world titles in 10 Olympic classes and seeking pre-selection for the 2012 London Olympic Games.”

The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of spectators on the shores and about 600 Million viewers worldwide on television and online.

Geographe Bay Race Week Sailing Regatta runs from February 25 to March 4, 2011.

The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will be held between Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 18, 2011.
