Gaia has been crowned the 2016 Battle of the School Bands winner following the final in Darwin last night.

Gaia was one of 17 finalists from across the Territory who battled it out on stage and will now perform at BASSINTHEGRASS on Saturday 21 May 2016.

Also getting a gig at BASS is Isaac Smalley who took out the duo/soloist category.

“The 2016 Battle of the School Bands was the biggest to date, with increased interest from student’s right across the Territory.” Minister for Education Peter Chandler said.

“This year the competition has grown to 30 entrants, compared to 27 last year.”

“The annual competition is designed to support quality arts education in schools across the Territory.” Mr. Chandler said.

“It allows students to develop song writing, musicianship and performance skills as part of school curriculum.”

“It also provides vocational training and industry networking opportunities for those interested in musical careers, and fosters our local cultural life by bringing young performers and audiences from different schools together to share their creativity.” Mr. Chandler said.

“Our school motto is ‘Everyone Can Play’; it’s about getting involved in making music and it’s fantastic to see so many students having a go.” NT Music School Principal Andy Mison said.

“The competition celebrates the hard work and dedication our students have put in to honing their musicianship over many years.” Mr. Mison said.

Six heats were held throughout the Territory including

  • Alice Springs,
  • Darwin,
  • Groote Eylandt,
  • Katherine,
  • Palmerston,
  • Tennant Creek.

Now in its eighth year, the Battle of the School Bands is open to all NT Middle and Senior Years (7-12) students currently enrolled in a government or non-government school.

Entrants must compose and perform original music only and are judged on their stage presence, musicianship and originality.
