Police Officer Injured During Christmas Carols – Five Dock

A man has been charged following an assault on a Police officer in Five Dock overnight.

About 4,000 people attended a Carols by Candlelight function in Halliday Park, on McGrath Street, which started about 6pm.

Two Police officers were patrolling the event and were required to diffuse a number of altercations that erupted during the event.

About 10 pm further Police were called to the venue due to the swelling crowd and reports that a teenage girl had been assaulted.

A supervising sergeant from the Burwood Local Area Command attended and came across two men who were allegedly abusive and aggressive towards people in the crowd.

The officer approached the men in relation to their behaviour and one of them allegedly turned on the officer, punching him in the face.

The Policeman, who at this stage was surrounded by the volatile crowd, tasered the man bringing him under control and diffusing the situation.

The 18-year-old Five Dock man was arrested and taken to Campsie Police Station where he was charged with assault Police, resist arrest, and affray.

The man was given bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court 14 January 2010.

The officer was treated by paramedics at scene for a cut above his eye.

Investigations into the initial assault on the 15-year-old girl will continue.
