Recognition For Everyday Actions

Victoria’s City and Beachside Communities still have time to gain recognition for everyday actions with entries for the 2011 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards open until Friday 8 April.

“The Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards are about celebrating and highlighting community action by providing people with the opportunity to cultivate community pride and to gain recognition for their initiatives.” Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said today.

“Each award has several different categories, including reducing waste, preserving heritage, saving energy, water conservation initiatives and our new category, Community Leadership.” Mr. Smith said.

“The new Community Leadership category is about recognising outstanding achievement of a community group or organisation whose activities have met community needs effectively.”

Entering the awards is free for first-time entrants* or for those located within Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria member councils and shires. Simply visit the Sustainability Victoria website and fill out the application form.

Mr. Smith said it was also important that communities considering entering the awards understood that they did not have to create a new initiative to be eligible.

“These awards are not about highlighting only new initiatives. These awards recognise any initiative whether it’s long established or upcoming that can have a positive impact on the sustainability of your community.” Mr. Smith said.

“The Baillieu Government is proud to support the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards, as we see them as an effective and positive medium by which we can reward and promote sustainability initiatives being enacted by Victorian communities.”

Entries for the 2011 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities and Clean Beaches Awards close on 8 April.

*Councils entering for the first time must also become a member of Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria to be eligible.
