Former Forestry Minister Rory McEwen is deeply implicated in the forward sale of South Australia’s forestry assets in the south-east, Liberal Upper House Leader David Ridgway said today.

“The decision to sell was made in 2008 when he was Minister. He betrayed his electorate and the people of South Australia by his complicity.” Mr. Ridgway said.

“When his community and his electorate needed him most he walked away and resigned from cabinet.”

“But the three pretenders to the Premier’s throne, John Rau, Jack Snelling and Jay Weatherill share the guilt. They were in Cabinet or in Caucus when the sale was approved.”

“Not a single witness or submission at Parliament’s Select Committee on harvesting rights in ForestrySA, which met in Mt Gambier yesterday and today, supports the sale.” Mr. Ridgway said.

“I suspect the reason Treasury refuses to release its financial modelling is because the modelling would expose the sale as short-sighted, uneconomic and socially disastrous.

“I am appalled that ForestrySA can’t compare the proposal and its business-as-usual model because of Labor’s clamp-down on information from Treasury.” Mr. Ridgway said.

“This information is owned by the people of South Australia.”

“We all own the forests. Labor’s refusal to release the information is symbolic of its paranoia.”

“The Government’s culture of secrecy threatens not just the south-east, but State budgets for generations.” Mr. Ridgway said.
