Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan today reaffirmed the Victorian Coalition’s Pre-Election Commitments to East Gippsland, assuring the Bairnsdale Community the Government stands by its Promise to upgrades two Local Parks.

Joining Nationals Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull for a meeting with the East Gippsland All Abilities Playground Committee and local council, Mr. Ryan said the Government stood firm on its $500,000 pledge towards a new state-of-the-art playground at Davidson Oval.

“In 2004, parents of children with special needs, as well as Regional Disability Service providers recognised a lack of specialised local Playground Options.” Mr. Ryan said.

“This group expressed interest in creating a playground in East Gippsland where all people, including those with a disability and their families, could play together in a safe, fun and adventurous environment, and the Coalition will ensure that can become a reality.”

Mr. Bull, a strong advocate of the All Abilities Playground, said the playground design aimed to encourage repeat visits from families, with the attraction of accessible parking, a toilet block and a centrally located barbecue and picnic area.

The proposed $1.1 Million Project also has support from the East Gippsland Shire Council (EGSC), the Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce and Industry, numerous service clubs and disability groups.

“The state-of-the-art recreational area will be known as the All Abilities Playground, and will not only be a major community asset for Bairnsdale and East Gippsland but it will also become a popular tourist stopover point, contributing to the overall social and economic growth of the District.” Mr. Bull said.

“As the name suggests, this will be a facility for children and families of all abilities.”

Mr. Ryan and Mr. Bull today also met with the Bairnsdale Oval Committee to discuss the Coalition’s $500,000 Funding Commitment to upgrade the Local Oval.

“The Victorian Government pledged support to the Bairnsdale Sporting Community and believes this funding will be an investment in the future of young footballers, netballers and cricketers.” Mr. Ryan said.

“Upgrades to the Bairnsdale Oval will include the installation of new lighting, renovation of facilities for netballers and supporters, and a ground surface upgrade for the popular AFL Practice Matches.”

Mr. Ryan said Bairnsdale had a very active sporting community, with three Australian Rules football clubs, as well as producing the current Twenty/20 Cricket Captain, Cameron White.

“Projects of this nature require careful planning, with a clear scope, Project Management framework and budget, and discussions will need to soon take place with key agencies and stakeholders.” Mr. Ryan said.
