The final phase of the Country Fire Authority’s (CFA) radio replacement rollout is underway with the distribution of more than 1,700 Transportable Bag Radios (TBR) to brigade members across Victoria.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Peter Ryan visited the Sale Fire Station today where members received a TBR for use in their vehicles.

“The new TBRs were developed by the CFA’s radio replacement team following extensive consultation with brigade members and CFA staff working in the field to ensure it had the flexibility and features to respond to needs on the ground.” Mr. Ryan said.

“The end result is a custom-built kit that is self-contained with its own loud speaker, control head, mains power supply and a GPS unit with transmitting capabilities.”

“The TBRs have the power and range of a mobile radio and can be quickly transferred between vehicles or moved inside a building and powered by a mains supply.”

“The range of new features will better support CFA members in the field and allow them to respond more effectively and efficiently during an emergency.”

Mr. Ryan said the CFA’s four-year Radio Replacement Project had seen 10,000 hand-held and vehicle-mounted radios, in service since 1995, replaced with modern technology.

“The $56.7 Million Radio Replacement Project is almost complete and complies with one of the recommendations of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.” Mr. Ryan said.

“More than 11,000 digital radios have already been deployed to 1,220 fire brigades. A further 3,500 radios are held for replacement spares and growth in demand.”

“The new digital radios have a range of technical and safety benefits that will support CFA personnel during emergencies, and enhance interoperability with other emergency response agencies, once new digital networks become available.” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said the Victorian Coalition Government was committed to ensuring Victoria’s emergency services were equipped with the right tools and technology to carry out their important role in the community.
