Man Facing Court After Assault – Coogee

A man will reappear in court next month after the alleged assault of a man in Sydney’s east this week.

About 1.30 am on Monday 11 January, a 28-year-old Maroubra man was sitting on some stairs at Coogee Beach when he was approached by a man and a woman who asked him for money.

As the man walked away from the pair they allegedly verbally abused him, punching him to the head.

The man ran away and sought refuge in a hotel where Police were contacted.

Police attended a short time later and arrested a 19-year-old Surry Hills man.

He was taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray. The 19-year-old was refused bail and appeared at Waverley Local Court on 11 January. At that time he was granted conditional bail and will reappear at Waverley Local Court on 24 February 2010.

Investigations are continuing, however the nature of the incident and the content of the alleged verbal abuse, leads Police to believe the incident was not racially motivated.

Eastern Beaches Local Area Command detectives are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the assault or know of the woman’s identity to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. All information will be treated in strict confidence.
