ABS Challenges Students To Design Australia’s Data Future

Victor P Taffa

The Australian Bureau of Statistics issued a challenge to Australian tertiary students today, inviting them to help design Australia’s online data future.

With more than $2,000 and an iPad up for grabs, the inaugural ABS CodePlay competition promises to attract some of Australia’s best and brightest technical minds.

“ABS CodePlay will reward new ways of making statistical data more appealing, relevant and useful to the broad community. Data is only valuable if it is accessible and meaningful. ABS CodePlay is designed to both animate and preserve Australia’s most important data assets.” Brian Pink Australian Statistician said today.

“ABS CodePlay asks students to transform data into information that is free and easy for the Australian community to understand and use. We want students to transform data into new forms that bring it to life for everyday Australians.” Mr. Pink said.

ABS CodePlay Challenges Students To:

  • Design better ways of Collecting Data;
  • Create new ways of bringing data to life using new media animations, mapping and other visualisation tools;
  • Transform data from a legacy format into a standards based format and back again.
