Gender Selection Not On Says New South Wales Parliament

New South Wales Legislative Assembly last night unanimously condemned gender-based abortion as it passed an historic bill to decriminalise terminations.

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said MP’s agreed to the Ministry of Health undertaking a review to determine whether the practice of gender-based terminations occurs within New South Wales.

“Ministry of Health will report its findings back to Parliament within a year.” Minister Hazzard said.

“I am concerned at some misinformed commentary that seeks to overshadow the intention of the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019, which was to put terminations into a medical and health framework instead of the Crimes Act.”

“There was debate about gender selection, including that there are some inherited medical conditions that are gender-specific.” Minister Hazzard said.

“My National Party colleague, the Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams moved that New South Wales would seek to get the facts, with a review. The House was unanimous its opposition to terminations being performed for the purpose of gender selection.”

“I am concerned that back in 2013, a Senate inquiry indicated that there was some evidence that gender-selective abortion was prevalent in other countries.” Minister Hazzard said.

“However, it was argued that there is no evidence that it is being undertaken in Australia or that the use of Medicare funding for it was prevalent.”

“As a team of Parliamentarians who want to ensure that gender-selective abortion does not happen in this country and this State, we will proceed to gather that data through the auspices of the Ministry of Health and the Centre for Epidemiology.” Minister Hazzard said.

“Not one member of Parliament should think that there is any opportunity in this State for gender-selective abortion to occur. It should not happen. But we must be careful in our commentary not to throw stones in any particular direction, especially towards any particular community groups, before we have that data.”

Review In Relation To Gender Selection

Secretary of the Ministry of Health must, within 12 months after the commencement of this section:

(b) prepare, and give to the Minister, a report about the review.

(2) The Minister must provide the report to the Presiding Officer of each House of Parliament.

(3) A copy of a report provided to the Presiding Officer of a House of Parliament under subsection (2) must be laid before that House within 5 sitting days of that House after it is received by the Presiding Officer.

(1) Notes that this House opposes termination being performed for the sole purpose of gender selection.

  • Cure for all types of Cancer is not a selfish, self-centred idea that abortion is.
