Police Hit With Cricket Bat During Arrest – Broken Hill

Four Police have been treated at hospital after being injured during the arrest of a man at Broken Hill this morning.

Police were called to a house in Marks Street about 2.15 am responding to reports that a man had threatened self harm.

Police will allege the man used a cricket bat to assault the four officers as they attempted to take him into custody.

A male Senior Constable required stitches and suffered concussion after allegedly being struck on the side of his head by the cricket bat.

When a female Senior Constable came to his aid she was struck in the lower back, a male Probationary Constable to the shoulder and a male sergeant on the right forearm during the struggle.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Hospital for assessment, before being released into Police custody and taken to Broken Hill Police Station.

The man has been charged with four counts of:

  • Assault occasioning actual bodily harm,
  • Use a weapon to avoid apprehension,
  • Resist arrest.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear in Broken Hill Bail Court this morning.

All four officers were treated at Broken Hill Base Hospital and released.
