Katherine region will soon be home to a new modern fire and emergency services facility, with the construction tender now awarded for the Katherine Fire and Emergency Services Precinct.

Around 240 tradies will participate on the project which will commence in August 2018.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Nicole Manison said the much-anticipated facility on Chardon Street will ease the cramped conditions for the staff in Katherine.

“Construction of the 950 sqm facility will be undertaken by local company C&R Construction for $8.5 Million.” Minister Manison said.

“New station will increase operational efficiency by providing a contemporary design that aligns to modern firefighting needs and allow NTPFES to provide services more effectively.”

Member for Katherine Sandra Nelson said increased efficiencies will improve response times, improve community safety, and reduce the risk of damage, disruption and costs associated with major events.

“This station is something the Katherine Fire Service has needed for a long time.” Ms. Nelson said.

“New modern building, which has been designed in consultation with the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NTPFES) and is supported by NT United Voice union, will create many local jobs in construction.”

New single level facility will:

  • Accommodate fire crew/staff and be available for afterhours use by volunteers;
  • Provide a venue for training;
  • Offer a workspace for vehicles and safety equipment;
  • Provide shelter for fire fleet on standby;
  • Allow for further expansion to enable the facility to service the community into the future.

A master plan for the site allows for the future relocation of the whole Katherine Emergency Service to be co-located on this site.
