Community Invited To Share Its Vision For Ballarat Station Precinct

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder and Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan today urged Ballarat residents, traders and commuters to get involved and have their say in creating a strategic plan for the Ballarat Station precinct.

Mr. Mulder said the Victorian Coalition Government was undertaking a master planning project, in partnership with the City of Ballarat, to examine the role of the precinct as a transport hub and the opportunity to unlock under-used land and structures within the site for transport and other activities and purposes.

“While the precinct is primarily used as a transport hub, the Ballarat Station buildings are of significant heritage value and a source of local pride.” Mr. Mulder said.

“This is a terrific opportunity for the Ballarat community to get involved, share their local knowledge of the problems and put forward creative solutions to improve the precinct over the long-term.”

“The first round of the community engagement will be a fact-finding mission to nut out the issues, priorities and opportunities for the precinct.”

“All suggestions are welcome, as every idea will help inform the master plan to create a vibrant place that is commercially and socially successful, and pedestrian focussed.” Mr. Mulder said.

Mr. Ryan said the master planning project was another victory for regional Victoria with funding allocated from the Regional Growth Fund money set aside specifically for spending in regional areas.

“The Regional Growth Fund has invested $75,000 into this $300,000 project.” Mr. Ryan said.

“The Coalition Government is proud to support Ballarat as it creates a vision for this important space.”

Mr. Mulder said the consultation process will build on previous community discussions about the Station and will include both face-to-face and online opportunities for the Ballarat community to get involved and help create a clear vision for the precinct.

The master planning project is being managed in partnership between VicTrack, the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure, Regional Development Victoria and the City of Ballarat.

The focus of the master plan is on the use and development of the precinct across the short, medium and long-term, not the frequency or nature of rail services.

The master plan is scheduled for completion in early 2014.

The community is invited to have their say and help identify the issues, priorities and opportunities for the precinct at two workshops as follows:

Time: 2.30 pm – 4.00 pm or 6.30 pm – 8.00 pm

Date: Tuesday 16 July

Where: Jackson and Co, corner of Mair and Lydiard Streets
