State Government has today appointed Chris Dawson APM as Western Australia’s new Commissioner of Police.

“We have chosen Mr. Dawson to provide new leadership to Western Australia Police at a time when we are focused on delivering improved services to the community.” Premier Mark McGowan said.

Mr. Dawson was formerly Western Australia Police Deputy Commissioner for 10 years and has more recently headed up the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission for the past three and a half years.

“Methamphetamine continues to wreak havoc in our community and we will work together with Mr. Dawson to implement our Meth Action Plan, along with our 100-strong Meth Border Force, to interrupt the supply of meth into Western Australia.” Premier McGowan said.

State Cabinet and Executive Council have approved the appointment for a term of 5 years.

Mr. Dawson has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, having served in both country and metropolitan positions throughout Western Australia.

As superintendent, Mr. Dawson was the inaugural principal of the Joondalup Police Academy.

He is also a recipient of the distinguished Australian Police Medal.

As Deputy Commissioner of Western Australia Police, Mr. Dawson was responsible for the serious and organised crime and Counter Terrorism portfolios.

“Mr. Dawson’s extensive Policing experience in organised crime and counter terrorism, make him the best person to steer Western Australia Police through today’s Policing challenges.” Minister for Police Michelle Roberts said.

“Mr. Dawson’s recent experience as Chief Executive of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission has put him at the forefront of the fight against the scourge of meth nationally.”
