Young families in the Pilbara Region are among the first in Western Australia to benefit from the opening of Tambrey Early Learning and Care Centre, the first purpose-built Child Care Centre to be located on a Public School Site.
Officially opening the new centre in Karratha today, Premier Colin Barnett and Education Minister Liz Constable said it would provide day care for children from birth to five years old.
Premier Barnett said the joint initiative between the State and Federal governments and Woodside Energy and formed part of the National Quality Framework for early childhood and care.
“It is the first of five centres to be established in WA and will help relieve pressure on families while introducing their children to the basic skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in school.” the Premier said.
Education Minister Liz Constable said the State Government had donated the land for the new centre, with the Federal Government and Woodside Energy funding the construction.
“Significant work by the State was also done behind the scenes to ensure the legislative hurdles could be overcome.” the Minister said.
“The fact that both the State and Federal governments were able to work together with Woodside Energy, parents and the wider community demonstrates the very strong commitment this Government has to improving educational opportunities for young children.”
The centre offers 120 places and comprises four activity areas; a nursery; studio for art and craft based activities; and a central play area. The secure landscaped outdoor area features a covered play area with separate zones for different age groups, sand pits and a tricycle track.
Woodside CEO Don Voelte said Woodside was pleased to have joined forces with the Federal and State Governments to fund construction of the Tambrey Early Learning and Care Centre.
The YMCA won the tender to operate the centre, which began operating this month.
