Chief Minister Holds First Meeting With The Prime Minister

Chief Minister Michael Gunner has met with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Gunner and Prime Minister Turnbull discussed ways in which the Commonwealth and Territory governments can work together for the benefit of Territorians.

“It’s important that the Prime Minister and I have a good working relationship, so that our governments can work together from the top down.” Chief Minister Michael Gunner said.


“This meeting was a good opportunity to present the new Territory government’s agenda directly to the Prime Minister.”

The Prime Minister and the Chief Minister confirmed the details of the original funding arrangement that was struck between the Prime Minister and the former Chief Minister.

The Commonwealth Government and the Northern Territory Government will equally share the costs for the Royal Commission.

Chief Minister Gunner reaffirmed the Territory Government’s cooperation with the Royal Commission.

The Prime Minister and Chief Minister discussed Northern Development, Defence in the North, taxation and election commitments including the delivery of a PET scanner.

Chief Minister Gunner reiterated the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to working constructively with the Commonwealth Government.


Discussion of Northern Territory Statehood at a previous meeting of the Prime Minister and all State Premiers and Chief Ministers it was agreed unanimously that the Northern Territory be granted Statehood from 1 July 2018.
