Deputy Premier Peter Ryan and Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell today opened a three bedroom Bushfire Compliant (BAL 40) Demonstration House at Kinglake.

Mr. Ryan said the high quality home ticked all the boxes of bushfire compliance, energy efficiency and affordability.

“Two home designs have been developed, each with a distinctive design approach and construction that offers choice to members of the community preparing to build a new home.” Mr. Ryan said.

The second bushfire compliant house has been constructed at Marysville and is also now open for inspection.

“Both houses are six-star energy efficient homes, with a BAL 40 Rating, so they meet some of the most rigorous bushfire safety compliance standards and will reduce energy bills for families.” Mr. Ryan said.

These homes are part of a joint initiative between the Department of Human Services, the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect.

Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said bushfire compliant and energy efficient homes would provide an affordable option for families who lost so much in the Black Saturday bushfires and were now looking to rebuild.

“These houses have a fixed construction price of $150,000 for any contracts entered into before the end of May this year.” Ms. Lovell said.

“This offer will be available for any residents rebuilding on their own land. The price will then be indexed to the CPI, so it will remain very good value.”

The Price Covers construction of the house, but not external services, consulting or other site works that may be needed.

Link Building Group was awarded the contract to construct the Kinglake house, which was designed by Buckerfield Architects while the contract to construct the Marysville house was awarded to AR & CR Wheeler Nominees and designed by Visionary Design Development Pty Ltd. Tenders for the Project were assessed by a panel of Government officials and consultants.

The Demonstration Homes are open for Public Inspection until May 2011 and are located at 58 Falls Road, Marysville and 3256 Healesville-Kinglake Road, Kinglake.
