Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher today announced that Victoria has secured the right to host Australia’s first ever world ranking snooker event.

The Australian Goldfields Open will be played in Bendigo from 18-24 July 2011 providing an outstanding opportunity to see top sporting action in regional Victoria.

“The Australian Goldfields Open is the latest addition to Victoria’s award winning major events calendar of exciting, world-class events that is sure to thrill and entertain Victorians and visitors alike.” Ms. Asher said.

“The event will showcase our beautiful and historic Goldfields region through a global broadcast which will reach over 66 countries; including key tourism markets such as China and the United Kingdom.” Ms. Asher said.

With an established following in the United Kingdom, the sport of snooker has continued to grow in recent years including attracting strong interest in Asia; in particular China.

“This event really puts Bendigo on the map and raises the profile of regional Victoria on the world stage.” Ms. Asher said.

The Australian Goldfields Open sits alongside other prestigious events on the world snooker circuit including the Shanghai Masters and the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, England.

“The real potential of this event is the significant broadcast exposure which will reinforce Victoria’s position as a premier tourism destination.” Ms. Asher said.

Two Australian wildcard entrants including one Victorian will have the opportunity of a lifetime to play alongside the world’s best snooker players including Victorian Neil Robertson, the first Australian to win the World Snooker Championship since 1952.

The Australian Goldfields Open is another win for Bendigo. In August this year the Bendigo Art Gallery will host The White Wedding Dress: Two Hundred Years of Wedding Fashions as part of the Bendigo International Collections.

“These events bring an international flavour to regional Victoria and are an opportunity for visitors to take advantage of Bendigo and the surrounding region’s tourist attractions during their visit.” Ms. Asher said.

The Australian Goldfields Open forms part of an overall strategy to highlight regional Victoria and will provide economic benefits to the local business community through increased visitation.

Ms. Asher said securing sporting and cultural events of this high calibre provides significant economic and tourism benefits for the whole of Victoria.

“The Coalition Government is committed to supporting tourism in regional Victoria and we are delighted to welcome this exciting event to our state.” Ms. Asher said.
