Tasmania Shadow Minister for Health Jeremy Rockliff

O’Byrne Abandons Patients

Health Minister Michelle O’Byrne has abandoned Tasmanians left languishing on elective surgery waiting lists, according to Shadow Minister for Health Jeremy Rockliff.

“Ms. O’Byrne today failed to explain why she supported $110 Million from the State Budget going into closing Forestry Tasmania down, instead of flowing into health and allowing Tasmanians in pain to finally get surgery.”

“The Liberals Roadmap to Recovery and Growth reinstates elective surgery funding of $76 million that’s up to 15,000 extra operations in our hospitals.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“Ms. O’Byrne needs to tell Tasmanians who have been on waiting lists for years and seen their quality of life plunge as a result, why she has labelled the Liberals extra investment in frontline health as ‘not responsible’.”

“Michelle O’Byrne is living in a fantasy land if she believes that her cruel policy of freezing elective surgery has not impacted on Tasmanians.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“The fact is her massive cuts to elective surgery have had a significant impact on thousands of Tasmanians, their health and our health system.”

“Under this Minister, hospital beds have been closed, and frontline health jobs have been lost.”

“It time for the Minster to finally admit that slashing elective surgery was an ill-considered strategy that has had a major impact on our health services and support the Liberals commitment to restore elective surgery.” Mr. Rockliff said.
