Funding for youth radio will double if the Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition is elected to Government this month.

Making the announcement on the Student Youth Network (SYN) today, Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs Hugh Delahunty said a Coalition Government would provide an additional $200,000 over four years to support youth participation in community radio.

“This funding will encourage more young people, particularly in Rural and Regional Parts of the State, to get involved in Community Radio.” Mr. Delahunty said.

“It will be used to run rural workshops to connect young people and students living in country Victoria and give them the skills to get involved in their local Radio Station.”

“Where appropriate a Coalition Government will also provide grants for studio upgrades and equipment such as solid state recorders.”

Mr. Delahunty said Victoria had some fantastic community Radio Stations which actively promoted youth programs and helped give young people a voice in their local community.

“A Coalition Government will expand on the work already being carried out by these stations and give them additional resources to reach more young people.” Mr. Delahunty said.

“The Coalition will also renew funding for SYN, which is run by volunteers under the age of 25.”

“SYN has proven a valuable stepping stone into the broadcast industry, providing practical experience and launching the career of many successful broadcast journalists and presenters.”

“A Coalition Government will support SYN and other community Radio Stations to ensure more young people have an opportunity to make their views heard.” Mr. Delahunty said.
