B-Double Drives Off Hume Highway Overpass – Albury
A truck driver has had a lucky escape after his B-double truck fell at least 10m from a Hume Highway overpass onto a street below at South Albury this morning.
The crash happened about 1.40am when the truck left the highway and drove into a gap between the Northbound and Southbound road-bridges.
The vehicle became airborne before it fell 10 m onto East Street, with the cabin becoming embedded into an embankment then catching fire.
The 42-year-old male driver was pulled from his cabin by two passing motorists.
He was taken to Albury Base Hospital with burns to his arms and legs and a possible back injury.
The Highway is closed either side of the overpass due to concerns that the structure may have been damaged by the impact of the fully-laden truck. Police have requested engineering experts attend the scene to assess any possible damage.
Diversions are in place by the Old Hume Highway at the Lincoln Causeway at Wodonga and Borella Road at Albury.
The truck was loaded with cow hides.
