Australia’s largest and most innovative design event, the State of Design Festival, kicked off in Melbourne tonight showcasing Victoria’s creative design industry.

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, Louise Asher has officially opened the 2011 State of Design Festival trade fair.

“The Victorian design sector is renowned for creative, innovative and clever design. The State of Design Festival highlights the exceptional quality of Victorian designers.” Ms. Asher said.

Victoria’s vibrant design sector contributes around $7 Billion annually to the state’s economy, generates approximately $300 Million in design-related exports and directly employs around 76,000 people.

“The festival promotes Victoria’s design industry and the role of design in improving quality of life, business productivity and competitiveness.” Ms. Asher said.

The festival features over 100 events across metro and regional Victoria from 20 to 31 July.

“You will see, hear and experience some of the best examples of design, be moved by the many and varied displays of design, engage in discussions, and interact and learn from the diverse program on offer.” Ms. Asher said.

“Exploring the theme Design That Moves, this year’s festival will feature a variety of events, workshops, talks and topics for all Victorians to enjoy.

Look: Stop: Shop will explore window displays and in-store installations by design-minded businesses.

The 9 to 5 Talks Program, a series of Skype conversations, will pose nine questions to five of the world’s most important design thinkers.

Micro-kitchen by Broadsheet will see designers working with leading chefs to design a soup of the day.

The Victoria India Service Design Jam, an open innovation online workshop, calls upon Australian and Indian designers and students to develop design solutions.

“Design is a critical enabler of economic development, social connectedness and social wellbeing and the Victorian Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that Victoria retains its position as Australia’s design leader.” Ms. Asher said.
