Around 4,000 athletes are flexing their muscles in Central Australian ahead of the official opening of the Alice Springs Masters Games this afternoon.
Opening Ceremony kicks off at 5 pm at Anzac Oval, offering up a great opportunity to size-up the competition while making new friends.
“Territory Government recognises the important economic and social benefits the Masters Games provide to Alice Springs. This is why we continue to invest in major sporting infrastructure upgrades across the town, creating local jobs and improving the competitor experience.” Minister for Tourism and Culture Lauren Moss said.
“Tonight’s Opening Ceremony is sure to be one of the key highlights of the week, with rock royalty Jon Stevens kicking off the games in style, supported by the Swell Sisters and local band Wolfpack Amadeus.”
Competitors and spectators are in for a week of jam-packed fun with 36 different sports held across 8 days, including 3 brand new sports on top of a fantastic program of entertainment and social events.
1986 Alice Springs Masters Games was only the second event of its kind to be staged in the world. The only previous multi-sport masters’ event was the first World Masters in Toronto, Canada in 1985.
“Almost 800 volunteers will be dedicating hundreds of hours to help make the games a success, so a big thank you for all of your help.” Minister Moss said.
Alice Springs Masters Games will be held October 13-20, with the Opening Ceremony kicking off at 5 pm today and the Closing Ceremony wrapping up celebrations on 20 October.
